Commentary on Italy's international seafood trade and its impacts

Being within a geographical area, EU-27, which imports large proportion of the fish products consumed annually from abroad, Italy finds itself in particularly critical situation; domestic production fishing and aquaculture on whole accounts for only 20% consumption even less case crustaceans cephalopods. Despite its strong dependence foreign countries, per capita is quite high, at 31 kg/y recent times; furthermore, among abroad there number species (or their families) mostly obtained through fishing. A wiser exploitation national resources, greater development patterns relying wild shellfish are desirable.
